Sad, sad news today: Rock and visual art legend Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, has passed away in California due to complications from multiple sclerosis, Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone are reporting. Van Vliet, one of the most influential figures in rock history, was 69.

Now if you’ll just get around to inducting Peter Gabriel (eligible since 2002); Incredible String Band (eligible since 1992); Captain Beefheart (eligible since 1993); Brian Eno (eligible since 1998); and Nick Cave (eligible since 2007); I’ll take back all those terrible things I’ve said about you over the years.
